Scoliosis describes the condition where a sideway curvature greater than 10 degrees is seen in the spine. Scoliosis can be structural or functional to which generates very different case management and prognosis. Structural scoliosis are typically found in adolescents from abnormal structural development during puberty and functional scoliosis are typically found in adults from structural compensation. Structural scoliosis requires a lot more attention and time in management as the spine is not yet fully developed where functional scoliosis can see improvements in a relatively shorter period. This makes scoliosis screening in teenagers extremely important as delayed treatment have been shown to be much less successful.
